Mamata Banerjee Warns PM Modi Against ‘Trusting Amit Shah Blindly’, Raises Fresh Concerns Over Voter Roll ExerciseLL nm

In a sharp escalation of political tensions, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being driven by Union home minister Amit Shah, claiming that he is functioning like an “acting Prime Minister.”

Banerjee questioned the pace and intent of the SIR process, arguing that completing such a large-scale exercise within just a fortnight—at a time when Bengal is facing heavy rains, natural calamities, and ongoing festivals—is “unrealistic and suspicious.”

According to her, opposition leaders have openly hinted at the possibility of “several lakh names” being deleted from Bengal’s voter list.

Reiterating her distrust, Banerjee urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be “cautious” about Shah, dramatically comparing him to Mir Zafar, the historical figure accused of betraying Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah.

She suggested that Shah’s growing influence could one day politically undermine the Prime Minister himself.

Meanwhile, the opposition bloc has intensified criticism of the Election Commission, accusing it of operating under BJP pressure.

Similar allegations of irregularities in the SIR process have surfaced from Bihar, further fuelling the nationwide debate over electoral transparency and neutrality.
