In the quiet tribal village of Ordeeh in the Manora development block of Chhattisgarh, a young girl named Amisha Kerketta was born into a humble farming family. From early childhood, Amisha suffered frequent illness, leaving her parents anxious and helpless. Their lives changed when a medical team under the Chirayu Yojana examined her at the District Hospital, Jashpur and diagnosed her with congenital heart disease.

For her father, Ashok Kerketta, who sustains his family through farming, the cost of heart surgery was unimaginable. But thanks to the Chirayu Yojana—a flagship national child health programme initiated under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and implemented effectively in Chhattisgarh under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai—the family found hope.

Under the scheme, Amisha was referred to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Nava Raipur, where expert doctors successfully performed her heart surgery free of cost. Today, 11-year-old Amisha is healthy, vibrant, and full of life—her story stands as a symbol of how government-backed health initiatives can save lives in the remotest corners of India.

Chirayu Yojana: Healing Children, Empowering Families

The
Chirayu Yojana—part of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) under the National Health Mission (NHM)—is a comprehensive health programme that ensures early detection and treatment of diseases in children aged 0 to 18 years. It covers a wide range of serious conditions, including congenital heart defects, cleft lip and palate, cataract, deformed limbs, and hearing impairment—a total of 44 identified diseases.

The initiative reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make healthcare accessible for every child in India, and the strong governance of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai who has ensured that Chhattisgarh’s children benefit from quality healthcare facilities without financial burden.

How the Scheme Works

Children are screened for health issues through a robust network of Anganwadi centres and government schools. Each development block has two Chirayu teams comprising AYUSH doctors, pharmacists, lab technicians, and ANMs. The scheme ensures that even in remote or tribal regions, no child is left untreated due to lack of awareness or access.

If a condition cannot be treated locally, children are referred to higher-level hospitals across the country, with the entire cost—including travel, surgery, and hospital stay—borne by the government.

Data & Achievements

  • More than 1,76,000 children have received treatment under Chirayu in Chhattisgarh.
  • In 2022–23 alone, over 21,096 children were treated successfully.
  • Over 23.6 lakh children were screened between April 2022 and early 2023.
  • The state currently operates 330 Chirayu teams to ensure comprehensive coverage.

These figures show the scale and success of the scheme’s implementation, made possible through coordination between the Central and State Governments.

Groups of Diseases Covered

The 44 conditions under Chirayu are divided into four categories based on the level of care required:

  • Group A: Serious diseases requiring tertiary or specialized hospital care.
  • Group B: Conditions treatable at district or community hospitals.
  • Group C: Issues manageable through medicines and local care.
  • Group D: Cases needing counselling, rehabilitation, or developmental services.

Impact and Gratitude

Amisha’s family expressed heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, saying the scheme has been a blessing for poor families. The initiative ensures that no child’s future is compromised due to poverty or lack of medical facilities. Amisha’s recovery has restored joy and peace to her family—her smiling face is a living testimony to the transformative power of public healthcare.

Challenges and Way Forward

While the scheme’s success is evident, challenges remain in raising awareness among tribal communities and expanding infrastructure in remote districts. Experts suggest increasing outreach through awareness campaigns, transportation support, and stronger rehabilitation services for children who need long-term care.

Conclusion

Under the joint leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the Chirayu Yojana is emerging as a model of compassionate governance. It has not only given new life to thousands of children like Amisha Kerketta but also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to healthcare equality and human dignity.
